What are water sports?

Water sports covers every discipline practised at sea, on lakes, on rivers or in a pool — powered by swimming, paddling, wind, an engine or a wave. In Türkiye, sea sports concentrate along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, white-water disciplines follow the high-flow rivers of the Black Sea and Eastern Anatolia, and pool disciplines run indoors all year.

Listings on this page range from one-off tasters to certified training programmes, from equipment rental to multi-day tours. If you are new, starting with an instructor-led intro session and renting gear before buying is the lowest-cost route.

Types of water sports

SailingWind-powered boat classes. Training usually starts in small dinghies; gulet and yacht tours are crewed.
Scuba & freedivingScuba progresses through certifications (CMAS, PADI, SSI); freediving is breath-hold and has its own training path.
Surf familyWindsurfing, kitesurfing, wave surfing and SUP. Wind and wave conditions vary by region.
Paddle sportsSea kayaking, canoeing and rowing — low-impact endurance disciplines that load the back and shoulders.
Rafting & white waterTeam descents on graded rivers. Difficulty depends on flow rate and season.
Pool disciplinesSwimming, water polo and artistic swimming — indoor and season-independent.

How to choose a water sports centre

A water sports centre is not just a rental desk; your safety depends on how it operates. Check these before booking:

  • Instructor credentials: international certification level for diving, federation coaching licence for sailing and wind sports.
  • Equipment age and maintenance: are life jackets, regulators, wetsuits and rigging checked on a schedule?
  • Group size: the fewer participants per instructor, the safer and more productive a first session is.
  • Insurance: is personal accident cover included, and what does it cover?
  • Weather policy: refund or reschedule if the session is cancelled?
  • Access and facilities: distance to the jetty or beach, changing rooms, help carrying equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to swim to start water sports?

Basic swimming ability is expected in almost every sea and river discipline. Some life-jacket activities such as rafting or boat tours may accept non-swimmers — the exact requirement is stated in each listing.

When is the best season for sea sports?

On the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts the season generally runs May to October. Wind sports favour the steady summer breeze; diving is often best in late summer when water temperature and visibility peak. Pool disciplines run year-round.

Should I buy equipment or rent it?

Rent for your first season: you get gear matched to your size and level, and you find out whether the discipline suits you without a large outlay. Regular participants usually buy personal-contact items first (mask, wetsuit, boots).

From what age can children take part?

It depends on the discipline and the centre; sailing and swimming schools usually start around age 6-7, junior scuba programmes around 8-10. Each listing states its own minimum age.
