3 listingsWhat are the different types of sports?
A sport is a physical activity with its own rules, equipment and competition format. In everyday use the words discipline, category and branch all describe the same thing; official documents tend to say "discipline", while federations often say "branch".
Sporara lists 87 sports across 11 main groups. Each discipline has its own page where you can see activities, courses, rentals, tours and tournaments for that sport, along with the cities and sports centers offering them.
How are sports classified?
There is no single correct classification — it depends on the question you are asking. These five are the most widely used:
A sport can belong to several groups at once. Sailing is both a water sport and an outdoor sport; ice hockey is a winter, team and full-contact discipline. So rather than a single label, choose based on the training environment and intensity that suit you.
Which sports are the most popular?
In Türkiye, football leads by a wide margin in both spectator interest and licensed athletes, followed by basketball and volleyball. Participation tells a different story: fitness, swimming, running and hiking reach a far broader audience because they are easy to sustain alone.
Globally the picture is similar: football, cricket and basketball lead on following, while running and swimming lead on participation. Popular does not mean right for you — the criteria below make the choice easier.
How do you choose the right sport?
- Your weekly time If you can commit two sessions a week, individual disciplines work well; if you can commit a fixed day and time, team sports are easier to sustain.
- Your city Water and winter sports depend on facilities. A venue more than 45 minutes away is the most common reason people quit within a few months.
- Starting cost Running and fitness start with minimal equipment; horse riding, diving and motorsport need a larger budget from month one.
- Injury history For knee and lower-back issues, low-impact disciplines (swimming, cycling, pilates) are usually kinder — decide with a doctor.
- What you want socially If training is also how you socialise, group classes and team sports fit better; if you want focus, individual disciplines work.
If you are undecided, start with single trial sessions. Trying two disciplines in the same week answers the question faster than months of comparing on paper.
Frequently asked questions
How many sports are there?
There is no single agreed number — it depends on who is counting. The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics programme featured 32 sports. Counting international federations, recognised disciplines run well past a hundred. Sporara currently lists 87 sports.
Is there a difference between a sport, a discipline and a branch?
Not in meaning — all three describe the same concept. "Discipline" is common in Olympic and competition documents, "branch" in federation and education contexts.
Which sports are most popular in Türkiye?
Football comes first in spectator interest, followed by basketball and volleyball. By participation, fitness, swimming, running and hiking are far more widespread.
Which sport should a beginner choose?
The highest stick rate comes from a sport with an easy commute, low equipment cost and a schedule that matches your week. Swimming, running, fitness and group classes meet those criteria for most people.
Are exercises and sports the same thing?
No. A sport is a competitive discipline (basketball, swimming); an exercise is a single movement within a workout (squat, push-up, plank). You can find the basics in our exercises and movements guide.
