Bodrum Motosurf Experience
About the experience
A Motosurf is a carbon fibre board with an engine in it, and unlike a classic surfboard it needs no waves at all. The board pushes itself forward, so what carries you is not the movement of the sea but a wireless throttle strapped to your right hand. That single fact is what makes Bodrum such a natural place to try motosurf for the first time. The peninsula's deeply indented coastline means that whichever direction the wind decides to blow from, there is almost always a sheltered bay somewhere with water like glass. Between Torba, Gölköy, Türkbükü, Yalıkavak and Akyarlar, finding calm water on the day of your session is rarely a problem. This ninety minute experience is built as a first introduction to the sport, and no previous surfing, wakeboarding or watersports background is required.
What Happens in Ninety Minutes
The session begins on the beach. You pick up the board, which weighs somewhere between thirteen and fifteen kilograms, and learn how the jet pump drives it forward, how sensitive the throttle really is, and why the safety leash clips to your wrist or your buoyancy vest. Then you head into shallow water. Like everyone else, you start kneeling. This stage is about feeling the pull of the board and learning to shift your weight forward and back to keep the nose from digging in or lifting too far. Most participants are tracking a straight line on their knees within the first twenty minutes. After that comes the part everybody waits for: trusting the board enough to rise slowly to your feet. Covering your first standing metres, feeling the wind hit your face while you skim across turquoise Aegean water clear enough to see the bottom, is what people remember from these ninety minutes. Falling is a normal part of the process and completely harmless. There is no propeller anywhere on a jet pump system, so nothing can cut you, and the moment the leash pulls free the engine shuts itself down.
Choosing the Right Hour
In Bodrum the time of day changes everything. The meltemi wind usually stiffens through the afternoon and chops up the surface, while early morning leaves the bays mirror smooth. For a first attempt, morning sessions are noticeably easier, less tiring and far more rewarding. After booking, the team checks the wind direction and decides which bay offers the flattest water that day before confirming the meeting point with you. The season is generously long as well, running from late April through to early November, with water temperatures between June and October that make wetsuits a comfort rather than a necessity.
Safety and Equipment
All equipment is provided, including a wetsuit, an impact vest or buoyancy aid, and the safety leash. Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and a pair of water friendly sunglasses or goggles. Your instructor stays out on the water with you for the whole session, keeping a sensible distance while staying close enough to help. You need to be able to swim, and anyone with a relevant medical condition should mention it before the session begins.
