What is this training?
This programme is built from zero for adults who have never picked up a blade: eight weeks, two sessions a week, roughly ninety minutes each, sixteen lessons in total. The calendar is not arbitrary. Fencing is a matter of muscle memory, and someone who trains once a week walks back into the salle having lost most of the reflex built in the previous lesson. The gap of a few days between sessions, by contrast, is long enough for the learning to settle and for legs that have never worked this way to recover. Instruction is delivered by a certified coach, and everyone who completes the programme receives a certificate of attendance. No previous sporting background is required, and neither flexibility nor existing fitness is a precondition.
Three Weapons, and Why We Start with Foil
Fencing has three weapons, and they are not variations on equipment but three separate games. In foil the valid target is the torso, hits are scored with the point alone, and right of way applies: when two touches land together, who started the attack decides which one counts. In épée the whole body is target, there is no right of way, and double hits are possible, which makes it the more patient, distance-driven weapon. In sabre the target is everything above the waist and a cut scores as readily as a thrust, making it the fastest of the three. The programme begins with foil because right of way forces you to think in the correct order from day one: distance first, then preparation, then attack. That discipline carries over into épée and sabre; the reverse rarely does. After eight weeks anyone can move across to the épée or sabre group, since the footwork and the measure are shared ground.
What the Eight Weeks Cover
The opening weeks belong to the body: the en garde position, that low stance with the weight balanced across both legs, then advance and retreat footwork. The same period covers the foil grip and measure, the constantly shifting sense of the distance between you and your opponent. In the middle weeks the game itself begins: the lunge, a clean touch with the point, the parry and the riposte that follows immediately behind it, and the feint used to draw a reaction. In the closing weeks the pieces come together. You fence free bouts inside the club, learn the referee's hand signals and enough of the rulebook to follow a bout, and work on the electric equipment, plugged into the reel and scoring box on the piste. The first time the buzzer goes for a hit of your own, everything abstract until then becomes concrete.
An Adult Body and a Desk-Bound Mind
Fencing is called physical chess because the decision has to arrive faster than the movement; you read your opponent's intention while concealing your own. For anyone who spends the day in front of a screen, that is an unfamiliar mental load and an unexpected kind of rest, and it trains reaction and focus directly. Physically, the en garde stance keeps you in a permanent half squat, so leg and core endurance improve noticeably across the eight weeks. Flexibility is not needed at the start; it arrives along the way. Mask, jacket and plastron, glove and weapon are supplied by the club, and buying personal kit is not required.
Learning to Fence in Istanbul
Istanbul offers the widest choice of salles and clubs in the country, with options on both sides of the city, which makes it realistic to find a venue you can actually reach after work. Fencing is an indoor sport, so the programme is independent of the season: rain, heat and snow leave the calendar untouched. Adult groups usually sit in the evening slots, because here traffic is not a footnote but a planning factor, and fixing two evenings a week is more sustainable than compressing the same hours into a weekend. By the end you can fence a bout under the rules, you feel distance and tempo, you have a working defensive repertoire, and you can take part in club bouts. For anyone who wants to go further, the route to a licence and competition is open.
