The Ballıkayalar Weekend Vertical-Descent Preparatory Camp is a two-day technical preparation program designed for beginners getting ready for caving. First, we want to be honest: Ballıkayalar is not a cave. Located in the Gebze district of Kocaeli, this area is a nature site famous for its steep cliffs and vertical walls, and the training given here is a preparatory course covering SRT (Single Rope Technique) practices of vertical descent and station rigging. This camp aims to instill basic skills in a safe, open and controlled environment before moving on to the real cave phase. The program begins Saturday morning and ends Sunday evening.
On Saturday, upon arrival at the campsite in the Ballıkayalar valley, tents are pitched and camp is organized. In the morning session, certified instructors cover equipment introduction, knot knowledge and basic safety rules. This is followed by vertical descent practice on stations rigged on the steep cliffs. The first day is entirely devoted to descending, ascending and transition maneuvers on the rope. In the evening, the day is reviewed around the campfire. On Sunday, the focus shifts to station rigging and anchoring logic; participants learn to build their own stations under instructor supervision. At the end of the day, camp is packed up and a roadmap for the next real cave phase is shared.
In this preparatory camp you learn the fundamentals of vertical descent and station rigging. You will practice safe descending on rope, ascending with mechanical devices, descent-to-ascent transitions and passing knots. The distinctive focus of the program is the skill of station rigging: you learn anchor point assessment, load distribution, double-backup logic and rope management in the open environment of the steep cliffs. These skills form the foundation of your safety when you later move into a real cave environment. Correct use of the harness, carabiner discipline and in-team communication are also part of the program.
Accommodation takes place in tents pitched at the campsite in the Ballıkayalar valley. Tents are set up on suitable areas within walking distance of the climbing walls. Shared technical equipment, ropes and station-rigging gear are brought by the supplier team. Participants provide their own personal camping gear such as sleeping bags and mats; helmets, harnesses and descenders can be supplied via the rental option. A shared meal setup is arranged throughout the camp. Keep in mind that network and electricity access may be limited in the open natural environment of the valley; this is part of the camp's natural experience.
As a preparatory camp, safety is the highest priority here. All stations are rigged with double-backup by certified instructors and equipment is checked before every descent. Helmet, harness, descender, jammer and carabiners are included in the rental scope; those with their own gear may bring it. Static ropes, anchoring hardware and shared technical material are provided by the team. The open rocky environment makes it easier to clearly observe and correct maneuvers. Participants are asked to bring sturdy footwear, appropriate clothing and gloves. Group size is kept limited for safe supervision.
This preparatory camp is ideal for beginners who want to build a solid foundation in vertical techniques before starting caving. Anyone with basic physical fitness and a willingness to work at height can join. Participants aged eighteen and over are accepted; minors require parental consent and instructor assessment. No cave experience is required; on the contrary, this camp is the first and most important step toward moving into the real cave phase. To be honest, joining cave descents without completing this camp is not recommended.
Ballıkayalar lies within a nature park in the Gebze district of Kocaeli and is very easy to reach thanks to its proximity to Istanbul and Kocaeli. The area is known for its steep cliffs and hiking routes. The final stretch to the campsite runs along a trail and park road. The meeting point and transport details are shared with participants after registration. Parking is available for those arriving by car, and a shared meeting arrangement is organized for those using public transport. Dressing in seasonal layers is recommended.
The steep cliffs of Ballıkayalar are an open-air school where you can safely rehearse your vertical techniques before setting foot in a cave. Once you complete this preparatory camp, you will have made a confident, technically equipped start, ready for the real cave phase.
