Poyrazlar Lake Nature Park Orienteering Experience
About the experience
First Orienteering Experience at Poyrazlar Gölü Nature Park
Poyrazlar Gölü Nature Park, located near Adapazarı in Sakarya, is one of the most inviting areas in Turkey for those new to orienteering. The area around the lake is largely flat, and just behind it, a forest dominated by oak and hornbeam trees begins, with an open understory that is easy to walk through. This mix of flat and forested terrain makes it possible to learn without being overwhelmed by map reading: the lake is always visible as a large reference point, and the forest provides a genuine orienteering texture that requires some thought. Its proximity to İstanbul also makes it easy to visit for a day trip. We start the program with a brief introduction, discussing the colors on the map, path and road symbols, and how contour lines describe the gentle slope, then we try using a compass to orient the map to the terrain and take a simple bearing together. Most participants who reach the first control point realize that it's more understandable than they thought.
Control Point Logic and Difficulty Levels
Each target has an orange-white control flag and an electronic reading unit; when you insert your SI card into the unit, your passage is recorded. At the end of the day, we review the split times on the screen together, discussing which leg you were fast on and where you were hesitant. We offer three courses at Poyrazlar. The beginner course follows the flat walking ring around the lake; controls are visible from the path, the distance is short, and it's perfect for families with small children. The medium course enters the path network in the forest, teaching you to navigate by counting intersections. The advanced course requires using a compass to go straight and choose a route in the pathless sections of the forest. The half-day program takes about two and a half to three hours, and the full-day program takes about five to six hours, including a picnic break. Our guide stays with the group throughout the day; the meeting point and time are determined in advance, and everyone has a whistle.
Families, Preparation, and Respect for Nature
The Poyrazlar program is designed with families in mind. Thanks to the gentle slope and short distances, children can complete it without getting tired; taking turns carrying the map and looking for the control point turns the day into a small adventure. Adults can go out on their own at their level on the second tour. Bring a hiking shoe with a closed, non-slip sole, at least one and a half liters of water, a hat, a light rain jacket, and if you want, a small blanket for a picnic. We provide the map, compass, SI card, and first aid kit; we also use a separate starting area by the lake during crowded hours. The nature park is a protected area: we do not enter the reed bed by the lake, do not disturb the birds, do not break branches, and take all the trash we produce with us. If you want to take your first step with a map at Poyrazlar Gölü Nature Park, the groups are kept small, so create your registration in advance.
