Karakaya Traditional (Trad) Climbing Course

Located in the Sarıcakaya district of Eskişehir, Karakaya stands as one of Turkey's most respected traditional (trad) climbing areas and serves as a genuine school for advanced climbers. This advanced traditional climbing course is designed to teach you how to climb safely on granite cliffs with no fixed protection, placing your own gear as you go. Under the guidance of a certified instructor, you grasp the technical subtleties of crack climbing and the responsibility of building your own protection step by step. Karakaya's clean granite cracks offer one of the most instructive grounds in Turkey for learning trad technique.

Course Content

Training begins with the philosophy of traditional climbing and risk management. It then focuses on the art of placing protection: correctly setting active and passive devices such as cams and nuts into cracks, assessing load direction and testing the soundness of each placement. Trad anchor construction, building equalized and redundant systems, rope management and dynamically belaying a falling leader are studied in detail. Participants first practice placements at ground level, then climb real routes under supervision. Every placement is evaluated by the instructor and feedback is given.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this course you will know how to place cams and nuts into cracks, judge the reliability of those placements and build solid multi-point anchors. Granite crack technique, including hand and foot jamming, lay-backing and stemming, is demonstrated hands-on. You will also grasp advanced concepts such as protection strategy, route reading, gear economy and fall factor. Our goal is for you to become a responsible traditional climber able to make your own decisions without fixed protection. These skills apply to trad routes anywhere in the world.

Equipment and Safety

The technical equipment required for training is provided; the cam set, nuts, quickdraws, rope, helmet, harness and anchor materials consist of certified gear. Because safety in traditional climbing depends directly on correct placement, every protection point is meticulously checked by the instructor. Throughout the course you have the opportunity to practice under top-rope safety, keeping risks controlled. A low participant-to-instructor ratio ensures individual supervision, and ethical principles for protecting the natural area are also conveyed.

Who Can Join?

This advanced course is for participants who already have basic sport climbing experience and are competent in belaying and climbing movements. It is aimed at climbers wanting to transition to traditional climbing and ready to step beyond fixed protection. It is not suitable for beginners; confidence in belaying and basic rope techniques is expected as a prerequisite. Participants' experience levels are assessed during registration and groups are formed accordingly for efficient training.

Karakaya lies around the Sarıcakaya district of Eskişehir, within the green cover of the Sakarya valley. Reached by a reasonable drive from central Eskişehir, the area is an ideal retreat for traditional climbing with its natural granite cliffs and calm atmosphere. Spring and autumn are the mild seasons when granite offers the best friction. Meeting point, transport and local accommodation options are shared after registration.
