What is this training?
İzmir is a city used to being active. Its population runs along the Kordon, cycles the Karşıyaka seafront and lives intertwined with the sea. Yet in the scorching midday heat of July and August, most of those outdoor habits are put on hold. This beginner table tennis course offers an alternative that runs in an air-conditioned indoor hall and is unaffected by the season. You do not need to have played regularly before, as the programme is designed for absolute beginners.
How the Programme Works
The course runs in ninety-minute sessions. Each lesson begins with a short warm-up and hand-eye coordination work, then focuses on a single technical topic for the day. The first weeks cover grip, basic stance and footwork; forehand and backhand strokes, serving and receiving serves, putting spin on the ball and reading an opponent's spin follow in turn. The last part of every session is given to free play, where the technique just learned is tried in real rallies. Because the air conditioning is directed away from the table, the ball's flight stays consistent even in summer, which matters if technical work is to produce the right results.
Coaches and Group Size
Lessons are led by certified coaches in small groups, sized so the coach can work with everyone individually. A coach does not stop at demonstrating the correct movement; they name the specific mistake you are making, such as opening the wrist too early, leaving your weight on the back foot, or standing too close to the ball. At beginner level, this is what genuinely accelerates progress. Rackets and balls are included in the fee, and the coach will advise on racket selection if you would rather bring your own.
Who Can Join?
No prior experience or athletic background is required. The dense student population around Bornova and Buca is the programme's most natural group of participants, but people looking for a regular activity after work and those returning after a long break from sport can join comfortably too. Table tennis places low load on the joints, which makes it suitable across a wide age range. Ninety minutes a week is both enough for real improvement and sustainable.
What You Will Gain
By the end of the programme you will know the rules, be able to serve, receive an incoming ball under control and keep a rally alive. That foundation is what you need to enjoy competitive games and, if you wish, to move up to an intermediate group.
