Overview

The Dupnisa Weekend Caving Camp is a two-day intensive vertical-descent program designed for those taking their first steps into cave exploration. Held in the Demirköy district of Kırklareli, this camp takes place in one of Turkey's most established and widely used basic caving training areas. Running from Saturday morning to Sunday evening, you will camp in tents pitched in the forested valley where the cave is located, gaining both technical skills and camping culture in the heart of nature. The training is entirely hands-on; theory is kept brief and most of your time is spent on the rope.

Camp Program

When you arrive at the forested valley campsite on Saturday morning, the first task is pitching tents and setting up camp. Certified instructors then begin SRT (Single Rope Technique) practice on stations rigged on outdoor rocks and suitable trees. The entire first day is devoted to rope work: descending, ascending, using jammers and performing safety maneuvers. In the evening, experiences are shared around the campfire and the next day is briefed. On Sunday, the learned techniques are applied in a real setting as the group descends in a controlled manner into the non-touristic vertical levels of the cave. In the afternoon, camp is packed up and the program ends with an evaluation.

What Will You Learn?

In this camp you learn the fundamentals of single rope technique from start to finish. You will practice safe descending on rope, ascending with mechanical devices such as jammers and crolls, transition maneuvers between descent and ascent, passing knots and managing rope on deviated sections. Correct harness fitting, use of the descender and other braking devices, carabiner discipline and the logic of self-rescue in emergencies are all part of the program. Instructors follow each participant individually and no one advances to the next stage until each maneuver is approved.

Camp and Logistics

Accommodation is tent camping in the forested valley area. Tents are set up on shaded flat ground within walking distance of the cave. Shared technical equipment, rope transport and station rigging are provided by the supplier team. Participants are expected to bring their own personal camping gear such as sleeping bags and mats; helmets, harnesses and descenders can be obtained via the rental option. A shared meal setup is arranged throughout the camp and group solidarity is at the forefront. Note that you will be in a natural environment with limited electricity and network access, which is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the camp.

Equipment and Safety

Safety is the top priority of this camp. All stations are rigged with double-backup by certified instructors and equipment is checked before every descent. Helmet, harness, descender, jammer and carabiners are included in the rental scope; those with their own gear may bring it. Shared technical material such as static ropes and anchoring equipment is provided by the team. Participants are asked to bring sturdy mountain footwear, weather-appropriate clothing and gloves. Instructors are experienced in first aid and group size is kept limited for safe supervision.

Who Can Join?

This camp is ideal for complete beginners with no prior caving experience. Anyone with basic physical fitness and a manageable level of fear of heights can join. Participants aged eighteen and over are accepted; minors require parental consent and instructor assessment. Those who experience severe panic in enclosed spaces are advised to have a preliminary interview. Requiring no experience, this program builds a solid foundation for advanced caving and exploration trips.

Location and Access

Dupnisa lies within the Demirköy district of Kırklareli, amid the forest cover of the Yıldız Mountains. The region is reachable by vehicle from Istanbul and the final stretch to the campsite runs along a forest road. The meeting point and transport details are shared with participants after registration. Parking is available for those arriving by car, and a shared meeting arrangement is organized for those using public transport. Due to the cool, humid climate of the valley, dressing in seasonal layers is important.

This weekend in nature offers both a safe introduction to a new sport and an unforgettable camping experience. In Dupnisa's forested valley, with your first descent on the rope, get ready to step into the magical world of caving.
