What is this training?
Set on the shore of Lake Van, the largest lake in Turkey, Van holds a special meaning for learning to swim thanks to its vast waters and unique nature. To swim safely in this broad lake, you first need a solid foundation built with proper technique. Our Beginner Swimming Course is a structured program built from scratch for children and adults who cannot swim, run alongside a certified instructor. Our goal is to turn your fear of water into confidence, step by step.
What You Will Learn
The course begins with overcoming fear of water and adapting to it. In the shallow end you build confidence through breath-holding, face submersion and relaxation drills. Once you patiently pass this first step, correct breathing technique and floating on both back and front follow. The moment you feel the water carry you, the most enjoyable part of learning begins. Once the foundation is firm, we work the freestyle and breaststroke kick and arm pull separately and patiently.
Lake Van and Water Safety
The cold, vast and soda-rich waters of Lake Van pose a serious risk for non-swimmers. The strong foundation you gain in the pool can save lives in the lake. Water safety is a priority in our program: we teach you to roll onto your back to rest during panic, to stay calm in cold water, and to reach the shore safely. In this high-altitude region, awareness of water safety is especially valuable and gives families great peace of mind.
Week-by-Week Progress
Our multi-week program is gradual: week one breathing and water adaptation, week two floating and gliding, weeks three and four freestyle, weeks five and six breaststroke and building distance. Each lesson builds on the last, and you never skip a stage. Even during Van’s harsh, long winters, heated indoor pools keep training uninterrupted.
Who Can Join
The course suits both children and adults. We open dedicated groups for adults who never learned because of fear, and separate groups for children. You may choose small-group or one-to-one private lessons. Private lessons bring faster progress, while small groups are both economical and motivating. Our pools in the İpekyolu, Tuşba and Edremit districts are easy to reach.
Your Instructor and What Is Included
Certified coaches with lifeguard training lead every lesson. Pool access, equipment support and level tracking are included in the price. You only need to bring your swimsuit, cap and goggles. In small groups, the instructor attends to each student one to one, so no movement is left incomplete and everyone progresses at their own pace.
Beyond safety, swimming is one of the rare sports that exercises every muscle group in balance, supports heart and lung health, and keeps you fit without straining your joints. In Van’s high-altitude, cool climate, every lesson in the heated pool benefits both body and mind: it improves your posture, expands your breathing capacity and lowers your stress. Our beginners often say they feel visibly stronger, both physically and in their confidence, within a short time.
After the Course
By the end of the program you will comfortably swim two basic strokes and feel safe in the water. You will look out over Lake Van’s vast waters and the unique view across from Akdamar with confidence. It would be a shame to live on the shore of Turkey’s largest lake without befriending the water. Now is the right time to learn to swim from zero in Van; this skill stays with you for life, and it is never too late to learn.
