What is this training?
This listing describes an eight-week beginner programme built for adults who have never held a foil. The structure is fixed: two sessions a week, roughly ninety minutes each, sixteen lessons in total. The key to progress in fencing is not long training days but frequent repetition. An adult who comes to the salle twice a week advances noticeably faster than someone compressing the same hours into a single day, because the reflex learned in the last lesson has not yet faded by the time of the next. Instruction is delivered by a certified coach, and everyone who finishes receives a certificate of attendance. No previous sport, no flexibility and no particular level of fitness is required.
Why the Programme Opens with Foil
Fencing has three weapons, and what separates them is not the equipment; because the rules differ, the way you think differs too. In épée the whole body is target, there is no right of way, and both fencers can land at the same instant, which makes it a weapon of distance and patience. In sabre everything above the waist counts and a cut scores as readily as a thrust, so it is the fastest of the three. In foil the target is limited to the torso, only the point scores, and right of way governs: if two touches arrive together, the one who initiated the attack takes the point. The programme opens with foil because that convention teaches a beginner the correct order of fencing physically rather than theoretically. You establish distance, then prepare, then attack. The habit transfers to épée and sabre, and after eight weeks the foundation is there for anyone who wants to switch.
The Curriculum Week by Week
The first weeks are about stance and distance: the en garde position, advancing and retreating, the foil grip in which the fingers do the steering, and the feel of measure. In this period you do very little with the blade and learn a great deal with your feet, because it is not the hand that finds the touch but the footwork that brings you to the right distance. The middle weeks bring the attack: the lunge, a clean touch with the point, the parry followed immediately by a riposte, and the feint used to mislead an opponent. In the final weeks the programme turns into bouting. The mask goes on, you fence free bouts inside the club, you learn the referee's hand signals and the basic rules, and you work on the electric equipment, plugged into the reel and box on the piste. The outcome after week eight is clear: fencing a bout under the rules, a working sense of distance and tempo, a basic defensive repertoire, the ability to take part in club bouts, and an open route to a licence for anyone who wants one.
Fencing in İzmir, and What an Adult Gains
Fencing has an institutional history in the Aegean. İzmir clubs have been producing age-group fencers consistently for many years, and the city has salles operating both within clubs and within universities. For an adult beginner that means an established teaching tradition and a real club environment to continue in once the programme ends. Being an indoor sport carries particular value here: in July and August, at the hours when training outdoors becomes almost impossible, an air-conditioned hall lets you hold your routine right through the summer, and the rainy stretch of winter has no effect on the calendar either. Fencing is called physical chess, and the phrase is more than decorative. You read your opponent's intention, hide your own, and commit in well under a second. After a day spent in front of a screen that focus is a completely different experience from repetition-based gym work, and it trains reaction time directly. The constant half squat of the en garde position leaves your leg and core endurance markedly better after eight weeks, and flexibility is not a prerequisite; it develops along the way. Mask, jacket and plastron, glove and weapon are provided by the club throughout, and buying personal equipment is not required.
