Erzurum Ice Climbing Course

Erzurum's harsh winter conditions and frozen waterfalls make up one of Turkey's most distinctive stages for stepping into the unique world of ice climbing. This intermediate ice climbing course is designed to teach participants with basic mountain experience the techniques of crampons and ice axes, placing ice screws and belaying safely on ice, all under the guidance of a certified instructor. Course Content

Training begins with assessing the winter environment and reading ice conditions. Crampon technique, including flat-foot (French) and front-pointing movement, the correct swing and placement of the ice axe, balance and efficient motion are covered systematically. Then placing ice screws, evaluating placement quality and building anchors on ice are studied. Belaying on ice, protecting a falling leader and descent methods such as the V-thread are demonstrated. Participants first consolidate basic movements on low-angle ice, then move to vertical frozen waterfall sections under supervision. Conditions are reassessed before every climb.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this course you will know how to walk in balance with crampons, use the ice axe efficiently and progress on vertical ice while conserving energy. Placing ice screws, evaluating placement quality and building solid anchors on ice are demonstrated hands-on. Critical topics such as belaying on ice, fall management, using equipment in the cold and winter safety (avalanche awareness, hypothermia and frostbite risk) are also within scope. Equipment and Safety

The specialist equipment required for ice climbing is provided; crampons, technical ice axes, ice screws, helmet, harness, rope and anchor materials consist of certified, ice-appropriate gear. Because safety in a cold environment is vital, topics such as layered clothing and keeping hands and feet warm are also covered. Every ice screw and anchor is checked by the instructor; ice conditions are continuously monitored and plans changed when necessary. Participant numbers are kept low to ensure close supervision. Winter-specific risks such as avalanches, falling ice and weather changes are central to the course's safety culture.

Who Can Join?

This intermediate course is for participants with basic mountain or rock climbing experience who are familiar with belaying and rope techniques. General fitness able to withstand cold and physical exertion is expected. It is not suitable for complete beginners; basic familiarity with rope systems and the mountain environment is a prerequisite. It is ideal for those interested in winter mountaineering and wishing to move into a new discipline. Participants' experience and health are assessed during registration and the group is formed accordingly.
