What is this training?
Eight weeks, two sessions a week, around ninety minutes each: sixteen lessons in total. The programme is designed for adults who have never fenced before, and it aims at a genuine skill rather than a single trial lesson. Spreading the hours across weeks is deliberate, because progress in fencing comes from the frequency of repetition rather than from accumulating hours. A short gap between sessions lets a movement settle into muscle memory; a long gap starts erasing it. Lessons are delivered by a certified coach, and a certificate of attendance is issued at the end. No sporting background is needed to join: an adult starting from zero reaches the point of fencing a bout under the rules by the sixteenth session.
How the Eight Weeks Progress
The early weeks are stance and footwork. You learn the en garde position, knees open and weight balanced, then move on to the advance and the retreat. In the same period you work on the foil grip and on measure, the distance between you and your opponent, since fencing is in essence a question of who controls that distance. In the middle weeks the attack arrives: exploding forward in a lunge, taking a clean touch with the point, meeting an incoming attack with a parry and answering immediately with a riposte, drawing a reaction with a feint. The final weeks are bouting weeks. You plug into the reel and scoring box at the end of the piste and score under real conditions rather than in drills, learn the referee's hand signals and the basic rules, and fence free bouts inside the club.
Foil, Épée, Sabre: What Separates Them
The three weapons are three different sports. In épée the whole body is target, there is no right of way, and both fencers can score at once, which makes it a weapon of distance and patience. In sabre the target is everything above the waist, a cut scores just as a thrust does, and the tempo is very high. In foil the target is the torso alone, only the point scores, and right of way is decisive: when two touches land together, whoever started the attack takes the point. The programme opens with foil precisely because that convention forces a beginner to think correctly. You pay the price for attacking without first establishing distance in your very first week, and the lesson sticks. Once the base is in place, anyone moving to épée or sabre already has the footwork, the measure and the stance.
The Ground Ankara Stands On
Ankara's relationship with fencing is a long one, and that is no accident. As the capital it has concentrated the federation structure, referee and coach education and national-scale organisation for decades, and university teams and long-established clubs grew up in the same environment. For an adult beginner that means a teaching tradition with solid rules knowledge and indoor facilities built to standard across the city. Ankara's long winter is an advantage here rather than a drawback: fencing happens entirely indoors, so the calendar between December and February holds steady, and it is one of the few options that lets you train consistently in the months when outdoor sport is effectively suspended. Mask, jacket, plastron, glove and weapon are supplied by the club; personal equipment is not compulsory. Fencing is called physical chess for good reason. You read your opponent's intention, hide your own and commit in under a second, and for someone who works at a desk that focus is nothing like the repetition logic of a gym. The permanent half squat of the en garde position builds noticeable leg and core endurance in eight weeks, and flexibility is not required, since nobody's lunge is deep at the start. By the end you can fence a bout under the rules, feel distance and tempo, use a basic defensive repertoire and join club bouts, with the route to a licence open to anyone who wants it.
