Nage-waza (Throwing Techniques)

'Nage-waza' is the general name given to techniques for taking an opponent to the ground by breaking their balance. This category is examined in three main sections:

  • Tachi-waza (Standing throwing techniques): The process of taking a standing opponent to the ground.
  • Te-waza (Hand techniques): Movements using the arms to control and target the opponent.
  • Koshi-waza (Hip techniques): Movements using the hips to take the opponent to the ground.

Katame-waza (Control Techniques)

'Katame-waza' is the general name for techniques aimed at controlling the opponent on the mat and is divided into three main groups:

  • Osae-waza (Holding techniques): Movements made to hold the opponent firmly without them moving.
  • Shime-waza (Choking techniques): Methods of forcing the opponent to submit by depriving them of breath.
  • Kansetsu-waza (Joint locks): Aims to restrict the opponent by applying pressure to their joints.

Scoring and Penalties in Judo Matches

Judo competitions are determined based on a scoring system (ippon, waza-ari, etc.), and each type of point has an important place in winning the match. In addition, special penalties (Shido, Hansoku-make) also affect the course of Judo matches.

  • Ippon: Wins the match instantly and is achieved when the opponent falls fully on their back.
  • Waza-ari: A half point; two waza-ari make one ippon.
