Yenice Forest Orienteering Experience
About the experience
Yenice Forests: A Real Terrain for Experienced Participants
The forests in Yenice, Karabük, are considered one of the richest forest areas in Turkey in terms of biological diversity. This cover, where beech, oak, hornbeam, and spruce trees are intertwined, combined with valleys and steep slopes that have been minimally touched by human hands, creates a serious terrain for orienteering. We set up our courses in the Yenice Forests with this reality in mind: this is an area for those who want to test their map-reading skills. Our guided program still starts from the basics; we prepare a short training course for participants with no experience. In this section, we practice reading slope direction from contour lines, aligning the compass with the map, and estimating distance by counting steps. Then, everyone heads to the course suitable for their level.
Terrain, Control Points, and Difficulty Levels
The character of Yenice is distinct: deep valleys, rapidly changing elevation over short distances, and a cover that completely obscures the view in some areas. The trail network is sparse and almost disappears in some sections; therefore, stream beds, ridge lines, and forest roads are your most reliable handholds here. Control points are marked with orange-white flags; you touch your SI card to the reader next to each flag, and your passage is recorded. At the end of the course, you can review your split times to see which route choice worked for you. We offer three levels. The beginner course follows forest roads and provides a safe introduction for inexperienced participants and families. The intermediate level includes short transitions along valley edges. The advanced level reflects the true character of Yenice: progressing under dense cover using only a compass and contour reading. Our guide moves with each group, sharing boundaries, assembly time, and communication arrangements from the start.
Preparation, Duration, and Registration
The Yenice terrain requires generosity with equipment. Bring hiking shoes with good traction, ankle support, and waterproofing, long pants, a lightweight windbreaker, and at least two liters of water. The humid forest floor can be slippery; the best method is to proceed without haste, watching your step. We provide the map, compass, and SI card. The half-day program lasts approximately four hours, and the full-day program lasts seven hours, including a break. Children aged 10 and above can participate in the beginner course with an adult; we recommend previous orienteering experience for the advanced course. These forests are a rare asset that must be protected: we leave no trails, do not light fires, do not disturb any living creatures, and carry all our waste back. If you want to challenge yourself in the Yenice Forests, select a suitable date and create your registration.
