About the experience

A Small but Real Treasure Hunt in Sünnet Lake

Düzce's forest-surrounded small lake, Sünnet Lake, offers a reassuring and compact area for our orienteering experience for children. The lake's surroundings are like a well-defined circle; no matter which direction the child walks, they will soon come across a familiar point. This feature is a great comfort for first-time participants aged 7-12 who use maps and compasses. We describe the activity to children as a treasure hunt in nature: going to the points marked on the map, finding the orange-white control flags placed in the forest, and filling out the control card. The approximately two-hour program progresses with short and safe routes.

Another advantage of Sünnet Lake is its ease of access. Its location between İstanbul and Ankara allows it to fit comfortably into a one-day weekend plan. The trails on the lake's shore are clear and legible, and since the forest is not dense, children can easily see their friends and guides. The shade under the trees provides coolness even on hot days. The reflections on the water and the silence of the forest are a natural invitation for children to notice nature.

Map, Compass, and Control Card Become a Game

We start the program not with a technical explanation, but with curiosity. Our guide lays out the map on the ground and asks the children: What could this blue stain be? When the answer is Sünnet Lake, the connection between the map and the terrain is immediately established. Then comes the compass; we discover together why the red tip always points in the same direction and learn to orient the map to the north. The logic of the control flag is also quickly understood: each flag has a sign, the child marks it on their card, and heads to the next point. As the card fills up, the excitement grows.

We keep the groups small; this way, the map passes from hand to hand, and each child gets the chance to make their own decision. Our guide provides constant supervision, but doesn't give away the answer. Even a wrong turn is instructive here: the child stops, looks at the map, thinks, and finds their own solution. These small moments nurture the sense of direction, the courage to make decisions, and self-confidence. For two hours, there are no screens; just the lake, trees, and the next flag to be found.

Information and Registration for Parents

What you need to bring with you is simple: closed-toe sports shoes, a water bottle, and a hat. A light jacket can also be useful, as the forest lake surroundings can be cool in the morning hours. We provide the map, compass, and control card. Parents can either accompany the group or wait in the seating areas on the lake's shore. At the beginning of the activity, we review the area's boundaries, meeting point, and safety rules with the children. Respect for nature is an integral part of the program: we don't leave trash, don't disturb the creatures in the lake and forest, and don't stray from the designated trails. You can create your registration for this enjoyable day where your child will try to find their own way.
