About the experience

Soğuksu National Park: Finding Your Way in the Black Pine Forest of the Capital

Soğuksu National Park, located just north of Kızılcahamam, has a distinct climate despite being approximately eighty kilometers away from Ankara. The area's backbone consists of large-trunked black pines; the trembling poplars and oak groups that grow among them create differences in color and texture within the forest. The floor of the black pine forest is mostly open and covered with needle leaves, which increases visibility between the trees. This openness is a significant advantage for someone learning to navigate: you can look at both the map and the terrain at the same time.

The terrain of Soğuksu consists of steep hills and dry streams that have settled between them. The ridges are distinct, and the valleys are narrow; this structure is a real lesson in understanding what contour lines convey. The clean and cool air brought by the high altitude makes walking for extended periods enjoyable, even in the middle of summer. The trails are not as dense as those in Belgrad, so participants learn to rely on the compass and the shape of the terrain rather than the trail from an early stage.

How the Guided Program Works

We start the day with basic training in the open area at the park entrance. The scale of the map, north lines, the meaning of colors, and how to read the control description card are explained step by step. You try to align the compass needle with the north and rotate the map according to the terrain, then take a simple bearing. The guide also shows you a practical way to estimate distance by counting steps; this skill will come in handy on Soğuksu's sloping terrain.

After the warm-up, we move on to the control points. The orange-white flags hung in the forest match the circles on the map, and the description of each point tells you what to look for. You record your passage by reading your electronic SI card at the unit; at the end of the course, we evaluate together where you hesitated on which leg. The guide stays close to the group at the first points, and then the participants make their own route decisions. Getting off track is also part of the learning process, and with the guide, there's no risk.

Duration, Level, and Preparation

The event is open to adults and families; there's a short course that follows the trail and ridge line for beginners, and a longer option that prefers in-forest routes for the more experienced. The half-day program lasts three to four hours, and the full-day program lasts about six hours, including a lunch break. Families can complete the same course together; correct reading is more important than speed.

Bring non-slip trail shoes, long pants, a light windbreaker, and at least one and a half liters of water; the air cools quickly in the shade at Soğuksu. The guide has a whistle, first aid kit, and a map showing the area boundaries. This is a national park: we don't enter nurseries, don't light fires, carry our trash with us, and keep our distance from wildlife. The quota is limited; create your registration now to reserve your spot.
