Soğuksu National Park Children Orienteering Experience
About the experience
Treasure hunt in the forest, specially designed for kids at Soğuksu National Park
Located in Kızılcahamam, 80 kilometers from Ankara, Soğuksu National Park is one of the most easily accessible addresses for families in the capital. The unique resinous scent of the black pine forest, the soft hills, and the clean air transform this place into an ideal playground for children. In this approximately two-hour experience, we introduce orienteering as a treasure hunt in nature for participants between the ages of 7-12. Each child receives their own map and a small compass, then sets out to find the orange-white control flags placed among the trees. The goal is not speed, but the thrill of discovery that comes with finding the right spot.
The soft hills of Soğuksu are not challenging for children's legs. Since the slopes are gradual, it is easy to walk and the hilltops provide understandable references when looking at the map. As children progress along the trails, they soon begin to ask themselves: should I go up from here or follow the path? This is where the decision-making skill that orienteering teaches to children begins.
Understanding the map, turning the compass, marking the card
Our program starts with a short preparation game. We show children what the colors on the map mean: green for forest, white for runnable forest, and brown lines for hill height. Finding the clearings between the black pines on the map is the child's first major achievement. Everyone takes turns holding the compass and turning the map north; this simple movement is the basis of the sense of direction. Then, control cards are distributed. Each child marks their card as they reach each flag and heads towards the next point. The routes are consciously kept short and safe; they all stay within the limits set by the guide and no point is placed far from the trail network.
At the end of these two hours, the child has not only found a few flags. They have also moved away from their screen, made their own decisions, thought together with their friends, and learned to feel safe in nature. Each point they find adds a small brick to their self-confidence. Noticing bird sounds in the silence of Soğuksu, discussing the age of trees, and learning to pass through nature without leaving a trace are also an integral part of the program.
Notes for parents and participation
We keep the groups small and an experienced guide is at the head of each group; children are under supervision throughout the program. Parents can either accompany the group or wait at the starting point. All you need to bring is closed sports shoes, water, and a hat. Since the weather in Kızılcahamam can remain cool even at noon, a light jacket may also come in handy. If you want your child to establish a real connection with nature, you can register for this program at Soğuksu National Park.
