Poyrazlar Gölü Tabiat Parkı Children Orienteering Experience
About the experience
A Treasure Hunt Day for the Whole Family at Poyrazlar Lake
Poyrazlar Lake Nature Park, one of Sakarya's beloved green areas, is tailor-made for our orienteering experience for children. The flat walking areas around the lake and the nearby forest area are combined; this mixed terrain offers a fun and exciting playground for children aged 7-12. We describe the activity to children as a treasure hunt in nature: going to the points marked on the map, finding the orange-white control flags, and filling out the control card. The approximately two-hour program is designed with short routes, so young participants can finish without getting tired.
One of the biggest advantages of Poyrazlar is its proximity to Istanbul; it's possible to reach with a short trip on the weekend. The picnic areas inside the park also complete the day: after the event, families can gather and sit together. The trails are wide and legible, the signs are clear; this makes it easier for the child to match the line on the map with the path under their feet. The flat sections along the lake shore provide a gentle start for children who have not yet gained full confidence.
Learning to Read Maps through Play
In the first half hour, there's a game instead of a technical explanation. Our guide opens the map and asks the children questions: What could this blue area be? Why does this black line look like the road we're standing on? As the answers come, the map transforms from a boring paper to a treasure plan. Then comes the compass. Discovering that the red tip always points north and turning the map accordingly is one of the children's favorite moments. The logic of the control flag and control card is also quickly understood: each flag has a sign, and as the card is filled, the treasure hunt is completed.
We keep the groups small on purpose. A small group means each child gets a turn to hold the map and choose the route. Our guide provides constant supervision but leaves the decision to the child; even wrong turns become part of the learning process. Thus, the sense of direction, the courage to make decisions, and self-confidence develop naturally. For two hours, there are no screens, just trees, the lake shore, and the next flag to be found.
Practical Information for Parents
It's enough for your child to have closed sports shoes, a water bottle, and a hat. We provide the map, compass, and control card. Since Poyrazlar Lake Nature Park is a very suitable area for families, parents can either accompany the group or wait in the picnic area. Before the event starts, we review the area's boundaries, meeting point, and safety rules with the children. Respecting nature is also an integral part of the program: we don't leave trash, we don't disturb the creatures by the lake, and we don't go off the designated trails. You can register your child for this beautiful day where they'll read their own map and find their own way.
