About the experience

A Treasure Hunt with a Scent of Pine in Marmaris National Park

Marmaris National Park, covered with red pine and black pine forests of Muğla, is a truly special scene for our orienteering experience for children. The soft hills overlooking the sea, the shaded trails filled with the scent of pine, and the changing scenery at every turn, make nature both beautiful and intriguing for participants in the 7-12 age group. We describe the event to children as a treasure hunt in nature: we give them a map, a small compass around their neck, and ask them to find the orange-white control flags placed in the forest. The approximately two-hour program is based on short routes; the goal is not to compete, but to explore.

The trails of Marmaris National Park are legible and distinct. The shade under the red pines makes the hike enjoyable even on hot days. The hills are gentle, so children can climb without difficulty, and when they reach a control point, seeing the sea through the trees is the reward for their small effort. The unique scent of black pine trees also turns into a beautiful story told by our guide: why do these trees only grow in these regions?

Map and Compass for Little Explorers

The program starts with a game, not a technical lesson. Children first learn the language of the map: green for forest, white for sparse woodland, black lines for trails. Then comes the compass. Realizing that the red tip always points north and rotating the map accordingly is the most exciting moment for many children; because the world on paper suddenly overlaps with the real terrain. The control card logic is simple: each flag has a sign, that sign is marked on the card, and as the card is filled, the treasure hunt is completed.

We work with small groups. This way, each child gets to hold the map, and it's their turn to choose the route. Our guide provides constant supervision but doesn't give ready answers; instead, they ask questions with hints. Even a wrong turn is valuable here, because the child realizes and corrects their own mistake. In this process, the sense of direction, courage to make decisions, and self-confidence develop naturally. Two hours of screen-free time is a great start for a love of nature.

Information and Registration for Parents

Things to bring are simple: closed-toe sports shoes, enough water, and a hat for the sun. A lightweight, long-sleeved shirt also provides comfort from the Mediterranean sun, which can be intense at noon. Our team provides the map, compass, and control card. Parents can either accompany the group or wait at the meeting point and greet their children at the end. At the beginning of the event, we discuss the area's boundaries, meeting point, and safety rules with the children. Since we are in a national park, respect for nature is especially important: we take our trash with us, do not touch plants and animals, and do not leave the marked trails. You can create your registration for this experience where your child will find their own way amidst the scent of pine.
