Mardin Tennis Experience
About the experience
With its stone houses overlooking the Mesopotamian plain, in Mardin where history began thousands of years ago, tennis turns into a unique open-air experience under a honey-coloured sun, where past and present intertwine. Swinging your racket against the view of the boundless plain, it feels as if history and sport breathe at once. This is not a course; it is a relaxed, social tennis gathering about feeling good. Our aim is not to prepare you for a race, but to help you spend a pleasant few hours in a setting surrounded by history.
Why play tennis in Mardin?
Mardin, in the unique geography of the southeast, is like an open-air museum built on a steep slope, watching the Mesopotamian plain stretch to infinity below. Its climate is dry and hot; very hot summers and mild winters. So the most pleasant time for outdoor tennis is spring, autumn and the mild days of winter. Modern sports facilities on the Yenisehir side offer spacious, flat courts a little away from the old city's stone fabric. Playing on a court facing the plain, the breadth of the horizon adds a whole new serenity to your game.
The court and the atmosphere
Mardin's multicultural, hospitable spirit is felt on court too; in this city where different languages and traditions meet, everyone treats one another warmly. The courts are usually set in open, spacious areas facing the plain. The honey-coloured light changes through the day; soft in the morning, bright at noon, golden in the late afternoon. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly; no one keeps score, everyone is at their own ease.
What will you experience?
A friendly companion welcomes you on court. You first prepare your body with a short warm-up, then discover at a relaxed pace how to hold the racket, your footwork and how to approach the ball. With gently fed balls you make your first strokes over the net and naturally feel the difference between a forehand and a backhand. As you feel ready, we move on to short rallies and simple serve attempts. Our aim is not to prepare you for a tournament but to let you enjoy that pleasant moment when the ball meets the racket. No competition, no pressure; just movement, laughter and a good day surrounded by history.
Who can you share the experience with?
Someone who has never held a racket and someone returning after years away can both join comfortably. For students of Mardin Artuklu University it can be a break between classes, for workers a chance to shed the week's fatigue, and for families a moment to move together. You can come with a friend, your partner or on your own. Everyone up to intermediate level feels at ease here; no flawless stroke is expected.
Best season and hours
Because Mardin's summer heat can be quite high, it is wisest to prefer the cool of early morning or late afternoon in summer; the midday sun is very strong. Spring, autumn and the mild days of winter are ideal for playing all day. In autumn especially the weather is just right; neither too hot nor too cold.
What should you bring?
Comfortable sportswear and flat-soled sports shoes are enough; rackets and balls are provided. Because of Mardin's summer heat, keeping plenty of water, a hat and sunscreen with you is important. Ending the day with tea in the old city's narrow streets or tasting the famous almond sweets is the most Mardin way to finish. Fill your water bottle and leave the rest to us; just enjoy tennis on a court facing Mesopotamia.
