Malatya Tennis Experience
About the experience
In the shadow of mountains rising among apricot orchards, tennis in Malatya, the warm-hearted city of Eastern Anatolia, turns into an open-air experience where everything to do with the soil, fruit and sun is generously abundant. On this fertile plain fed by the branches of the Euphrates, when you take your racket in hand you breathe in the apricot-scented air that surrounds you. This is not a lesson; it is a relaxed, social tennis gathering entirely about feeling good. Our aim is not to prepare you for a race, but to help you laugh, move and have a good time for a few hours.
Why play tennis in Malatya?
Malatya sits at the crossroads of Eastern Anatolia, on a broad plain ringed by mountains. Summers are hot and dry, winters harsh; so the best time for outdoor tennis is spring and autumn. When the apricot trees blossom in April and May, the view beside the court becomes a visual feast in itself. Sports facilities in the Battalgazi and Yesilyurt districts offer a spacious environment away from the city's daily pace. The warm hospitality of the people of Malatya shows itself on court too; even if you arrive as a stranger you soon feel at home.
The court and the atmosphere
The courts are usually set in broad, flat areas facing the mountains. The openness of the plain gives you a spacious playing area; when you look to the horizon, snow-capped peaks greet you. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly; no one keeps score or judges. Resting with an apricot treat during breaks is a warm detail that makes this experience uniquely Malatya.
What will you experience?
A friendly companion welcomes you on court. You first prepare your body with a short warm-up, then discover at a relaxed pace how to hold the racket, your footwork and how to approach the ball. With gently fed balls you make your first strokes over the net and naturally feel the difference between a forehand and a backhand. As you feel ready, we move on to short rallies and simple serve attempts. Our aim is not to prepare you for a tournament but to let you enjoy that pleasant moment when the ball meets the racket. No competitive pressure; just laughing, moving and having a good time.
Who can you share the experience with?
Someone who has never held a racket and someone returning after years away can both join comfortably. For students of Malatya's Inonu University it can be a break between classes, for workers a chance to shed the week's fatigue, and for families a moment to move together. You can join with a friend, your partner or on your own. Everyone up to intermediate level feels at ease here; no flawless stroke is expected.
Best season and hours
Because of Malatya's dry, hot summer climate, it is wisest to prefer early morning or late afternoon hours in summer; the midday sun can be strong. Spring and autumn are ideal for playing all day; April, when the apricot blossoms open, is a magical time in particular. Remember that winter can be cold and snowy; indoor alternatives are more suitable then.
What should you bring?
Comfortable sportswear and flat-soled sports shoes are enough; rackets and balls are provided. Because of the dry, hot climate, keeping plenty of water, a hat and sunscreen with you is important. Ending the day with the city's famous apricots or a glass of tea is the most Malatya way to finish. Fill your water bottle and leave the rest to us; just enjoy tennis in the shadow of the mountains.
