About the experience

Kurşunlu Waterfall Nature Park: Finding a Route on the Canyon Edge

Located in the northeast of Antalya, Kurşunlu Waterfall Nature Park offers surprisingly suitable terrain for orienteering, with its beech forest sloping down towards the canyon. The terraces formed by water eroding the limestone, the shaded trail network, small clearings in the forest, and prominent rock outcrops on the canyon edge create features that are easy to recognize on the map but require attention in the field. Our guided program uses the park's readable structure to teach the basics of navigating with a map in nature, step by step. After the meeting, we first examine the park's colorful orienteering map together: the changing transparency tones of the beech forest from dark green to light yellow, the meaning of trail thicknesses, and rock and water symbols. Then, you take the compass in your hand and try to orient the map to the north, i.e., to align the map with the terrain. This single skill allows most participants to feel safe within the first half hour.

Control Points, Difficulty Levels, and Daily Flow

Each target in the field has an orange-white control flag and an electronic reading unit. When you touch your SI card to the unit, your passage is recorded to the second; thus, at the end of the day, we can see together where you hesitated at which point. We prepare three separate courses at Kurşunlu. The beginner course follows the trails and waterfall viewing terraces, with almost no chance of getting lost. The medium course enters the dry streams and ridges in the forest, requiring distance measurement and step counting. The advanced course follows the upper edge of the canyon and makes you think about route selection. The half-day program takes approximately three hours, and the full-day program takes about six hours, including breaks and a picnic. Due to the Mediterranean climate, we start early in the morning or late in the afternoon during the summer months; in spring and autumn, you can hike all day.

Who Can Participate, What to Bring

The program is designed for adults and families; not having read a map before is not a problem, as our guide follows each group from introduction to finish. Families with children can walk the beginner course together, and parents who want to can go on their own on the second tour. Bring a non-slip, closed hiking shoe, at least one and a half liters of water, a hat, a light, long-sleeved top, and a small backpack if you have one; we have the map, compass, SI card, and first aid kit. We do not leave the marked areas on the canyon edge, do not step on the plant cover around the waterfall, and take back all the waste we produce; this park is a protected area, and leaving it as we found it is an integral part of the program. If you want to see how the map comes alive in Kurşunlu Waterfall Nature Park, please note that the quota is limited, so register in advance.
