About the experience

Treasure Hunt Among the Cedars in Kızıldağ National Park

Kızıldağ National Park, with its cool highland air in {SEHIR}, offers a refreshing and inviting area for our orienteering experience for children. The wide trails that pass through the ancient cedar and black pine trees alternate with open areas, allowing children aged 7-12 to feel free while remaining in their guides' line of sight. We introduce the activity to children as a treasure hunt in nature. The goal is simple yet exciting: to find the orange-white control flags placed in the forest by going to the points marked on the map. During the approximately two-hour program, we progress on short routes and accumulate a sense of small achievement at every step.

The open and airy structure of Kızıldağ is a significant advantage for a child using a map for the first time. The distance between the trees provides a comfortable viewing opportunity, allowing the child to easily match a clearing or path intersection seen on the map with the actual terrain. The proximity of Beyşehir Lake adds a unique flavor to the scenery; during breaks, our guide talks to the children about the plants of this highland and why the cedar tree lives so long.

Map and Compass Lesson for Little Explorers

We start the program with a gamified short training session. Children first learn the colors of the map: white and green tones represent the forest, yellow clearings, and black lines represent the trails. Then everyone takes their compass and tries to orient the map to the north. This small movement becomes a magical moment for the child; because the world on paper suddenly matches the terrain under their feet. We also gamify the logic of the control card: the symbol on each flag is marked on the card, and when the card is completed, the treasure hunt is completed.

We keep the groups small, so each child gets to hold a map and choose their own route. Our guide provides constant supervision but doesn't give away the answers immediately; instead, they ask questions that give the child hints. This approach naturally develops the child's sense of direction, patience, and decision-making skills. The two hours spent in Kızıldağ's clean air become a beautiful alternative to screen time and sow the seeds of a love for nature in the child.

What to Bring, What Parents Can Do

Closed sports shoes, enough water, and a hat that protects against the sun are sufficient. Although the highland air can get hot at noon, it can be cool in the morning, so we recommend bringing a light jacket or sweatshirt. The map, compass, and control card are provided by our team. Parents can either walk with their groups or wait at the meeting point and greet their children at the finish line. At the beginning of the activity, we discuss safety rules, area boundaries, and meeting points with the children. Our principle of respect for nature is clear: we take our trash with us, do not harm the trees, and do not scare the animals.
