Kas & Kalkan Sailing Experience
About the experience
The shores of Kaş and Kalkan in Antalya, set in the deep blue of the Mediterranean's clearest waters, are an arena where advanced sailing is truly put to the test. This experience is aimed at Advanced sailors; it brings together the challenges and rewards of sudden squalls, limited shelter, deep clear water and long-leg navigation. Guided by our experienced captain, you sail in the most striking coves of the Mediterranean while learning at the same time how real seamanship decisions are made.
Squalls and Sudden Weather Shifts
The most characteristic feature of the Kaş region is the sudden squall that mariners call the 'soluğan'. A calm sky can turn in a short time into stiffening winds and abrupt swells. These conditions teach you to read the weather, interpret the signs of cloud and wind, and make quick decisions. Our captain passes on the finer points of sensing these shifts in advance and preparing the boat accordingly; decisions to reef the sail and change course take on real meaning along this route.
Long-Leg Navigation
The waters between Kaş and Kalkan are deep and shelter is limited. This makes long-leg navigation and careful route planning essential. Moving from one cove to another, you learn to weigh distance, wind direction, weather and possible refuges. Historic waters such as Kekova and the views of the sunken city form a mesmerising backdrop to these long passages.
Clear Water and Deep Coves
The clearest coves of the Mediterranean are here. The water is so transparent that you can see the anchor chain beneath the boat many meters down. Anchoring in a suitable, sheltered cove and swimming in this crystal water is a peerless reward after long, demanding passages. Yet most of these coves are deep and anchoring requires technical knowledge, which reinforces the instructive side of the experience.
Who It Is For
This is ideal for sailors with solid skills who can handle a boat in changeable weather and are ready to make seamanship decisions. Those who want to push themselves, experience real Mediterranean conditions and take their navigation skills to a higher level will learn a great deal. It is not suitable for beginners; this experience demands experience and composure.
Safety
Sudden weather shifts raise the emphasis on safety to the highest level. A life jacket is mandatory for every guest, and a comprehensive safety briefing is held before departure. Our captain follows the forecasts meticulously and secures the boat quickly at the first sign of a squall. You are briefed in detail on safety harnesses, hand-holds and emergency procedures.
Best Season
Kaş enjoys a long season stretching from May to October. In the summer months the water is at its clearest and the daytime winds are usually predictable, yet the risk of an afternoon squall is ever present. Spring and autumn, with more changeable weather, test real seamanship skills. A day spent in Kaş and Kalkan is an unforgettable adventure in which you meet both the most generous and the most demanding face of the Mediterranean, one that will turn you into a true mariner; you live the magic of clear water and the discipline of the open sea in a single passage.
