İstanbul Motosurf Experience
About the experience
Büyükçekmece Bay is one of the very few spots around Istanbul where motorised water sports genuinely make sense. In the early morning the Marmara here turns to glass; before the wind wakes up, the surface becomes something close to a smooth runway. That is exactly the water a Motosurf wants. Unlike classic surfing, you never wait for a wave, because the board carries its own engine. A jet pump built into the carbon fibre hull pushes you forward, which means flat water with no swell at all still gives you a ride that can last as long as your arms hold out. This ninety minute single session experience is built for people who have never touched a motorised surfboard and want to find out how it actually feels. No prior level is required; being able to swim and being willing to get wet is enough.
What Your Ninety Minutes Look Like
The session opens with a short briefing on the beach. You pick up the carbon board, roughly thirteen to fifteen kilos, and feel how its weight sits in your hands. You learn how the wireless throttle strapped to your right hand responds, and how the safety leash clips to your wrist or your buoyancy vest. Then you go in. Like everyone else, you start kneeling: you settle onto the board, ease the throttle open and let the engine carry you forward. Those first minutes are often the most fun part, because you realise how quickly speed arrives. Once your balance settles, the instructor walks you through the attempt to stand up. The shallow, sheltered bay at Büyükçekmece is ideal for that transition; even if you go down, the water is warm, the current is weak and the bottom is forgiving.
Safety, Kit and Picking the Right Hour
All equipment is provided: wetsuit, buoyancy vest, an impact vest where needed, and the safety leash. One of the great advantages of a Motosurf is that it has no propeller. Thrust comes from a jet pump, so there is nothing cutting through the water beside you when you fall. Release the throttle and the engine drops out; pull the leash and the board shuts itself down. Your instructor stays on the water with you the entire time. When choosing your slot, we strongly suggest the morning. At Büyükçekmece the poyraz wind usually builds after midday and the bay creases over quickly, and flat water is far more forgiving for a first ride. The season runs from May into mid October, with September a favourite for many because the sea stays warm and calm.
Inside the City, Without the Long Drive
Perhaps the most valuable thing about this experience is simply how reachable it is. Motorised water sports normally mean a trip to a holiday resort, yet Büyükçekmece sits within a sensible drive of most of Istanbul via the TEM and E-5 motorways. You can book a weekday morning before work, or a weekend slot without leaving the city at all. As you ride, the open Marmara stretches away on one side while Büyükçekmece Lake and the historic silhouette of the Mimar Sinan Bridge frame the other. Ninety minutes later, walking back up the beach, most people are already asking the same question: when can I do that again?
