About the experience

A Day of Orienteering in Ilgaz Mountain National Park

Ilgaz Mountain National Park is an area where spruce and pine forests spread like a thick blanket, and the high altitude keeps the air cool even in the middle of summer. What makes this place special for orienteering is precisely this dense tree cover. The horizon line disappears among the trees, distant hills disappear from your field of view, and you naturally have to rely on the map and compass in your hand. Our guided program starts from the basics for this reason: it shows step by step in the field how to orient the map to the north, how to read the direction of the slope from the contour lines, and how to take the compass angle between two points. In Ilgaz, it's not the sense of direction that works, but the method; everyone realizes this within the first half hour, and this discovery is enjoyable in itself.

Terrain Reading, Control Flags, and Levels

The ground in Ilgaz is largely covered with dry needle leaf litter; walking is soft and silent. The trail network is less dense than in areas like Marmaris, but the forest roads are distinct. That's why using a reference point, a classic orienteering technique, is very useful here: you take a stream bed, a ridge, or a forest road as a guide and follow it to approach the control point. At each control point, you'll find an orange-white flag and an electronic reader next to it; when you touch your SI card to it, your passage is recorded, and you can see your split times at the end of the course. We offer three levels: the beginner course follows forest roads and is designed for families; the intermediate level includes short forest crossings; and the advanced level requires navigating with a compass under dense spruce and is aimed at experienced participants. Our guide accompanies the group, announces the boundary lines and assembly time from the start; no one is left alone in the forest.

Preparation, Duration, and Participation

The altitude of Ilgaz makes the weather conditions variable; a cool start in the morning can turn into a warm afternoon. That's why we recommend dressing in layers, carrying a light windbreaker and raincoat. Shoe choice is important: a waterproof model that grips and supports the ankle keeps your feet safe on the needle leaf litter. Bring at least one and a half liters of water and a small snack. The map, compass, and SI card are provided by us. The half-day program lasts about three and a half hours, and the full-day program lasts six hours, including a lunch break. Children over the age of eight can participate with an adult accompanying them; team-based courses can be prepared for corporate teams. We comply with national park rules, do not light fires, carry our trash back, and do not disturb the wildlife. If you want to learn how to read a map in the cool forest of Ilgaz, you can create your registration.
