About the experience

An Orienteering Experience Close to the City in Homeros Valley

Homeros Valley, neighboring Bornova district of {SEHIR}, is a piece of nature covered with maquis and pine, stretching right next to city life. This proximity is a great advantage for those who want to try orienteering: without planning a long trip, you can have a short and productive program where you can leave in the morning and return in the afternoon. Our guided event in Homeros Valley is designed according to this rhythm. We start with a short outdoor lesson: we solve the color language of the map, read where the slope descends from the brown contour lines, and find the north by aligning the compass with the map. Then we go to the first control point together. Most participants start to make their own decisions from the second point onwards, feeling comfortable enough; this rapid progress makes this place an ideal starting area.

Terrain, Control Flags, and Course Options

The terrain of Homeros Valley bears the marks of the Aegean climate: clusters of red pine, dry and thorny maquis cover between them, rocky outcrops, and a distinct bed descending to the valley floor. The terrain is generally moderate; steep but short slopes are balanced with comfortably walkable flats. The trail network is dense, and thanks to the proximity to the city, the sense of direction is never lost. We mark the control points with orange-white flags; when you touch your SI card to the electronic reader next to each flag, your passage is recorded, and you can see your split times at the end of the course. Short routes are a conscious choice here: courses between two and four kilometers allow you to make many decisions without getting tired and increase the learning speed. On a long course, you think a few times; on a short course, you think dozens of times. The beginner course follows the trails, is suitable for families, and allows children to experience a small sense of achievement at each flag; the intermediate level separates you from the trail and directs you to short maquis passages, where the compass really starts to work. Our guide accompanies the group, shares the terrain boundaries and assembly time from the beginning, and evaluates your route choice together when needed.

What to Bring, Who Can Participate

Since the maquis cover can be thorny, we recommend long pants and closed, grip-soled hiking shoes. The Aegean sun gets stronger from late spring onwards; make sure to have a hat, sunscreen, and at least one liter of water on your list. The map, compass, and SI card are provided by us. The half-day program takes approximately two and a half hours, and the full-day program takes five hours with a short break. Children aged seven and above can participate accompanied by an adult; courses can be prepared in team format for school groups, friend groups, and corporate teams. The valley is as fragile as it is close to the city: we do not harm the vegetation, do not light fires, carry all our waste back, and proceed without disturbing the wildlife.
