About the experience

First Treasure Hunt Experience in Homeros Valley

Homeros Valley, neighboring Bornova district of {SEHIR}, offers a distinct nature with its maquis and pine cover, despite being right next to the city. This ease of access is a significant advantage for our orienteering experience designed for children: without a long journey, we can quickly reach the location from the city and start the game. We describe the event to participants aged 7-12 as a treasure hunt in nature. With a map in their hands, a compass around their necks, and a control card in their pockets, they set out to find the orange-white control flags placed in the valley. The approximately two-hour program is ideal for a first experience, as it is designed with short routes.

The trails in Homeros Valley are distinct and easy to follow. The texture formed by the maquis plants and pines makes it easier for children to notice the changes in the area they see on the map in the real terrain. Since our routes are short, neither the attention of the younger age group is diverted nor do they miss the joy of finding multiple control points. The pine shadows provide coolness during hot hours, and the valley's calm atmosphere offers an unexpected silence for children coming from the city.

Map Reading and Compass: Simple, Concrete, Fun

We don't start the program with technical terms. Our guide opens the map and shows the meaning of the colors through play: green for dense vegetation, white for easily walkable forest, and black lines for trails. Then, we take out the compass. Discovering that the red tip always points north and turning the map accordingly is an exciting moment for most children; because the paper in their hands suddenly matches the valley under their feet. The logic of the control card is simple: the sign next to each flag is marked on the card, and as the card is filled, the treasure hunt is completed.

We work with small groups. This way, the map passes to each child in turn, and every child gets the chance to make their own decision. Our guide provides constant supervision but doesn't give ready answers; instead, they ask questions that give hints, allowing the child to find their own solution. Even a wrong turn is valuable here. In this process, the sense of direction, courage to make decisions, and self-confidence develop naturally; the two hours of screen-free time also make a great start for a love of nature.

Information and Registration for Parents

The list of things to bring is short: closed-toe sports shoes, enough water, and a hat for sun protection. A lightweight, long-sleeved shirt can also provide comfort from the {CITY} sun, which can be effective at noon. Our team provides the map, compass, and control card. Parents can either accompany the group or wait at the meeting point and greet their children at the end. At the beginning of the event, we discuss the area's boundaries, meeting point, and safety rules with the children. Respect for nature is also part of the experience: we take our trash with us, don't harm plants and animals, and don't stray from the marked trails. You can create your registration for this experience where your child will find their own way in a nature so close to the city.
