About the experience

Eskişehir Kent Ormanı: the easiest start for the first treasure hunt

For a child who will meet orienteering for the first time, choosing the right area is half of everything. Eskişehir Kent Ormanı is just the thing for this job: it can be reached with a short journey from the city, its trails are regular and signposted, and its boundaries are clear. As soon as the child steps here, they feel like they are in a regular and understandable game area, not in a foreign place. In our approximately two-hour program, we explain orienteering in nature as a treasure hunt to the 7-12 age group. Each participant gets their own map and a small compass, and then goes out to find the orange-white control flags hidden among the trees.

The greatest advantage of Eskişehir Kent Ormanı is its readability. The roads are distinguishable from each other, the intersections are clear, and every line on the map has a real-world counterpart. This clarity allows the child to experience a sense of success in their first attempt. The ease of access is also a separate convenience for parents; the event starts directly without the fatigue of a long journey.

Map reading, compass, and control card

We start the program with a short preparation game. We show and explain to the children that green means forest, white means sparse forest, and thin black lines mean trails on the map. Then everyone takes their compass and tries to turn the map north in turn; this small movement is actually the basis of the sense of direction. Then the control cards are distributed. The child who stamps the marker on the orange-white flag on their card earns the right to move on to the next point. Our routes are short and the points are close to each other; all of them stay within the safe boundaries determined by the guide, near the trail network. Thus, the child can try, and even if they go the wrong way, they can easily recover and see this as part of the game, not as a failure.

At the end of two hours, the child has not only found flags. They learn to make their own decisions, think with their friends, and move comfortably in nature. They move away from their screen, focus on a real task, and each point they find contributes to their self-confidence. We discuss the issue of respect for nature from the beginning: not leaving trash, not damaging plants, and not changing the location of the flags is everyone's common promise.

Information for parents

We keep the groups small and an experienced guide is at the head of each group; children are not left unattended throughout the program. Parents can either accompany the group or wait in the starting area. It is enough to have closed sports shoes, water, and a hat for sunny days with you. If you are looking for an easy, safe, and fun start for your child to meet orienteering, you can create your registration for this program in Eskişehir Kent Ormanı.
