What is this training?
Set among the forested valleys of the Yıldız Mountains in the Demirköy district of Kırklareli, this two-day basic caving course around Dupnisa Cave offers a complete introductory program for anyone taking their first steps into the underground world, guided by certified instructors. The watery and vertical levels of Dupnisa that lie beyond the tourist section provide an ideal training environment, offering both a safe learning space and the chance to experience genuine cave conditions. No prior experience is required; everything is taught from the ground up, step by step, and reinforced through hands-on practice.
Course Content
The course begins on the first day with theory lessons. Participants learn about cave formation, the underground ecosystem, caving ethics, and leave-no-trace principles. The theoretical foundations of Single Rope Technique (SRT) are then explained: the logic of safe movement on rope, system components, and basic physics. In the afternoon, knot work begins; the figure-eight, butterfly, and safety knots are practiced repeatedly. The second day is devoted to fieldwork, where what has been learned is tested in the vertical levels of Dupnisa. Belaying, descending and ascending on rope, and station passes are each practiced under instructor supervision.
What Will You Learn?
By the end of this course you will recognize the basic SRT equipment and know how to wear and use it correctly. You will learn controlled descent on rope, ascending with jumar and croll, belaying, and safely protecting one another. Basic orientation inside the cave, simple map reading, and in-group communication are also part of the program. You will develop the habit of recognizing risks in advance and making sound decisions underground. Instructors progress at each participant's pace, so everyone develops at their own level of confidence.
Equipment and Safety
All shared technical gear used during the course (helmet, lighting system, harness, descending and ascending devices, ropes, and carabiners) is included in the program. Participants need only bring suitable clothing and personal items. Safety is central to this program; equipment checks are carried out before every exercise, and instructors provide one-on-one supervision throughout the field sessions. Group size is kept limited so that each participant receives adequate attention, and vertical exercises are always conducted on the double-safety principle.
Who Can Join?
This program is designed for beginners in caving and anyone interested in underground sports. No prior experience is needed. Basic physical fitness and openness to moving in tight spaces are enough. Those who experience serious discomfort in enclosed spaces are advised to speak with the instructors before joining. Anyone with suitable age and health, curious about nature and learning, can benefit from this basic course.
Location and Access
The course takes place around Dupnisa Cave in the Demirköy district of Kırklareli, within the forest-and-valley setting of the Yıldız Mountains. The region is reachable by vehicle from Istanbul and Thrace; the meeting point and access details are shared before participation. This forest-surrounded natural setting offers an ideal atmosphere for both training and a camp experience, providing a calm learning environment far from city life.
At the end of two days, participants are equipped to safely apply the fundamental techniques of caving and can continue to more advanced training on a solid foundation. Accompanied by our certified instructors, you are invited to take your first step into the fascinating underground world with confidence.
