What is this training?
Nestled on the shores of the crystal-clear Gökova Gulf in the Ula district of Muğla, Akyaka is one of the most recommended spots in Turkey to begin kitesurfing. This 6-hour beginner course is designed so that even someone who has never touched a kite before can experience their first riding attempts on the water by the end of the day. What makes Akyaka special is its remarkably reliable afternoon thermal wind, which blows almost like clockwork; this predictable wind allows instructors to plan the lesson and lets you progress with total confidence.
Why kite surfing here?
The Gökova Gulf sits in a landscape where mountains meet the sea, and this topography creates a thermal wind that strengthens in the afternoons but never turns harsh or gusty. Akyaka's shallow waters, in places no deeper than waist height, act as a natural training pool for beginner-level riders. Learning kite control in an environment where your feet can touch the bottom is invaluable for both safety and confidence. The surrounding reeds, pine forests, and the cool freshwater channels offer an unmatched natural backdrop while you practice kitesurfing. Thanks to the steady rhythm of the wind, it is easy to predict at which point of the lesson you will enter the water, turning the beginner course into a relaxed and enjoyable experience rather than a stressful one.
What happens in the 6-hour beginner course?
The course follows a classic structure, but the pace is entirely tuned to your learning speed. In the first stage we hold a theory and safety briefing on land: you learn the fundamentals such as what the wind window is, how a kite generates power, and how the safety systems and quick-release work. Then we move to land training, where with a small trainer kite you grasp the basics of kite control, feel the wind window, and understand how to steer with your hands. This land phase is the most critical skill in kite surfing, and Akyaka's wide beach and meadow areas are ideal for it. Afterwards we head into the water; in the shallows you first learn body dragging, the technique of pulling yourself through the water with the kite. Toward the end of the day, you begin your first riding attempts with the board. At every step you are under the instructor's supervision, and progress is fully personalized.
Who can join?
This experience is designed especially for those with no prior experience. It is completely fine if you have never done kite surfing before, or even if you have no water-sports background beyond swimming. Anyone who can swim at a moderate level, has basic physical fitness, and is eager to learn something new can take part. Akyaka's calm, shallow waters are also suitable for children and teenagers to begin safely with an instructor. Although kitesurfing may look challenging at first, learning it in the right wind conditions and under professional supervision is far more accessible than you might think.
Safety and equipment
All equipment is included in the course fee: the kite, bar, harness, board, and life vest are provided by us. Our instructors are internationally certified and work with a low participant-to-instructor ratio, so everyone receives enough attention. Even though Akyaka's wind is steady, safety is always our priority; before entering the water you will learn emergency scenarios and how to keep yourself safe. Throughout the lesson the instructor is either beside you in the water or in contact by radio.
The Akyaka experience
Akyaka is not just a kite surfing spot; it is a feeling of a way of life. After the lesson you can wander the village's wooden-architecture streets, canoe along the freshwater channel, or watch the sunset over the gulf. This 6-hour beginner course offers both a thrilling adventure and a structured, safe learning journey. Feeling the freedom of kite surfing for the first time in the turquoise waters of Gökova will become an unforgettable memory. The wind is calling you; all you need to do is show up, and we will take care of the rest.
