Alaçatı Motosurf Experience
About the experience
Alaçatı has built its reputation on wind. Every kiteboarder and windsurfer in the bay spends the morning waiting for the afternoon thermal to fill in, for the water to churn, for the wind meter to climb. Motosurf wants the exact opposite. This 90-minute session is deliberately built around the short, precious hours at the start of the day, when the bay lies flat as glass and almost nobody is awake yet. Early in the morning, the shallow, sandy-bottomed water of Alaçatı Bay barely moves, and that mirror surface is exactly where a motorised carbon board performs at its sweetest. No prior experience is required. If you have never stood on a board in your life and your relationship with the sea consists of swimming, you belong in this session just as much as anyone else.
What Actually Happens Out There
The session opens with a short briefing on the beach. The machine in your hands needs no waves at all: it is a carbon fibre board weighing somewhere between thirteen and fifteen kilograms, driven forward by a jet pump. There is no propeller anywhere on it. It draws water in and pushes it out under pressure, which is precisely why it is safe to be in the water beside one. A wireless throttle strapped to your right hand decides your speed, and a safety leash clipped to your wrist or vest kills the engine the instant you separate from the board. Learning all of this takes a few minutes, and it is exactly what lets you relax once you are afloat.
You start from a kneeling position. The first laps are slow and deliberate. You learn how lightly the throttle responds, how the board stiffens underneath you as it picks up speed, and how turns come from shifting your body weight rather than steering with your arms. Most people spend the first half hour on their knees, then rise onto one knee, then commit to standing. The moment you get upright, the whole thing changes character: a board capable of climbing past fifty kilometres an hour trembles beneath your feet, wind whistles past your ears, and the stone houses along the shore blur into a stripe. Not everyone finishes their first session standing, and that is entirely fine. The goal here is the feeling, not the performance.
What If the Wind Arrives?
The Alaçatı thermal is predictable but stubborn. If the bay starts to roughen up towards midday, the session simply relocates. The sheltered coves on the Çeşme side, Ilıca and Boyalık, along with the water around Port Alaçatı, stay comparatively flat even when the main bay is unusable. The team checks the forecast and confirms the meeting point and time in advance, so keep your morning flexible rather than pinned to the minute.
You need to bring almost nothing. A wetsuit matched to the water temperature, an impact vest or buoyancy aid, and a safety leash are all provided. Pack swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, and a willingness to get thoroughly wet. The season runs from May through October, with the clearest mornings usually falling between June and September. İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport sits roughly an hour away, which makes the classic weekend shape obvious: ride at dawn, then spend the afternoon among Alaçatı's vineyards, cobbled streets, and long lunches.
